U.S. Defense Chief and Australians Insist Alliance Is Strong

By admin | February 25, 2008

This from the New York Times: Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and top Australian officials insisted Saturday that the security alliance between the United States and Australia had not frayed despite Australia’s recent pledge to remove all combat forces from Iraq …They also brushed aside questions about whether Australia’s growing economic ties to China would influence the country’s defense policy toward Beijing. Mr. Smith, the foreign minister, even pointed out how much the Bush administration had tied the American economy to the Chinese market. “Australia’s economic engagement with China is only beaten by the U.S.’s economic engagement with China,” he said.

Lu Kewen: ‘like a big brother next door’

By admin | February 6, 2008

I just caught this snippet on The Australian website from Lin Guanzhen, translation editor of Rudd Biography: “Through the biography, I have gained a feeling that Lu Kewen is like a big brother next door — born in a poor family, one of several children, worked hard, like any poor family in China. I think Chinese readers will learn from him - rely on yourself alone, and win success.”

Rudd translates into a legend

By admin | February 2, 2008

Rowan Callick, The Australian newspaper’s Chinese correspondent reports that the Chinese translation of Kevin Rudd’s biography is proving quite popular.

“THE latest Chinese blockbuster is not about a boy wizard, although the hero of the tale looks a bit like him. Appropriately, for the Chinese Year of the Rat, it’s about a politician - Lu Kewen, better known here as Kevin Rudd.”

Apparently Fujian Education Press is so convinced the “legendary life” of Lu Kewen will run off the shelves it has ordered its biggest ever print run.

The Australian edition has only sold 5000 copies since its launch in the middle of 2007, but the publishers of the Chinese translation expect to sell more than 10,000.
